Turning Bullying into Something Positive
Recently I started a GoFundMe page to raise funds for potential defamation proceedings after becoming the target of sustained online harassment and misinformation.
Over the past months, manipulated images and misleading commentary about me circulated on the Ku-ring-gai Speaks Up Facebook Group. This Group was set up by a sitting Councillor (and his sycofan) who was censured by the Council for his unlawful activity on the page, only to resurface under an Anonymous profile to continue the lies, harassment and bullying. His goal is to discredit sitting councillors, candidates, potential candidates and community leaders for his own pleasure. A number of people encouraged me to take a stand legally and generously contributed to help me do so. However, after seeking legal advice, I was informed that a defamation case requires demonstrating a measurable loss of reputation.
Interestingly, the experience has actually shown the opposite. The response from so many people has been overwhelmingly supportive. My reputation as an ethical leader is intact :)
Rather than pursuing a legal battle that would likely only prolong the conflict and draw me into a negative state, I have decided to pivot the fundraiser toward something positive.
That is why I am now raising funds for Dolly’s Dream.
Dolly’s Dream was established after the tragic death of 14-year-old Dolly Everett, who took her own life following sustained bullying and cyberbullying. Her story shocked Australia and sparked a national conversation about the devastating impact bullying can have on young people and their families.
The organisation works to change the culture of bullying in Australia by raising awareness, promoting kindness, and supporting young people and communities.
I chose this charity for a very personal reason.
When I was 16 years old, I experienced sustained bullying that led to deep depression and anxiety for many years. I grew up in Umina, and there was a period where I could not ride my bike down Ocean Beach Road without being spat at, having things thrown at me, being called vile names, or even being pushed off my bike. I was picked on because I always spoke up against injustice, even if it was dangerous to do so. Thankfully, nothing has changed :)
Experiences like that stay with you.
No young person should feel alone when they are being bullied.
I will personally donate $1,000 to this fundraiser; money better spent than in a defamation case.
If you feel moved to do so, I invite you to join me in supporting Dolly’s Dream and helping ensure that fewer young people experience the kind of harm bullying can cause.
Sometimes difficult experiences can be transformed into something meaningful.
You can sponsor me and leave a message by clicking the donate button above.
Together we can make Dolly's dream a reality.

Dolly, you were a beautiful, sensitive young person who had your life cut short by cyberbullying. Your family, friends and community turned the tragedy into something positive. I'd like to turn my experience into something positive too. xxx
